THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHING A WEDDING WITHOUT INTERRUPTING IT
WHEN TO DIRECT, WHEN TO OBSERVE, AND WHEN TO LET THE MOMENT BE
Xico says this on almost every call with our couples, and he knows it might sound controversial coming from a wedding photographer. In fact, plenty of photographers might completely disagree with him.
But this is something he truly believes:
A wedding is not a photoshoot.
It is a day you have spent months, sometimes years, imagining. A day filled with people you love, conversations happening all around you, nervous hands, loud laughter, unexpected tears, champagne glasses, music, movement, and hundreds of little things you may not even notice until you see them in a photograph.
And while creating beautiful imagery is an important part of the day, we never want the pursuit of the perfect photograph to take you away from actually experiencing it.
Our job is to document all of it beautifully without making the photography become the day itself.
There is an art to knowing when to step in and when to step away.
And we believe both matter.
we do direct.
There is sometimes an idea that natural photographs can only happen when a photographer gives absolutely no direction.
We see it differently.
Direction can be incredibly subtle.
It can mean finding the most beautiful light in a room. Moving you a few steps away from a distracting background. Adjusting a dress, fixing a strand of hair, changing the position of a hand, or simply telling you where to stand and allowing everything else to happen naturally.
Sometimes we see a frame before it exists.
We know that if you walk through a particular patch of light, turn slightly toward each other, or stay exactly where you are for another second, there is a photograph there.
So yes, we will tell you.
But direction should never feel like performing for the camera.
It should create space for something real to happen.
and we know when to stop
There are moments when the best thing we can do is absolutely nothing.
When your friends see you dressed for the first time.
When your dad is standing just outside the room, laughing and taking it all in.
When someone reaches for your hand during the ceremony.
When your best friend says something during a speech that makes you laugh before suddenly making you cry.
When everyone you love ends up on the dance floor together.
Those moments do not need our help.
They need our attention.
Knowing when not to interrupt is just as important as knowing how to create a beautiful portrait.
EVERY PART OF THE DAY NEEDS SOMETHING DIFFERENT
We do not photograph an entire wedding with the same approach.
During getting ready, we may pay closer attention to the room, the light, and the details around you.
During portraits, we take more control. We guide you into good light, look for strong compositions, and give enough direction that you never have to wonder what to do with your hands.
During the ceremony, our presence becomes quieter.
During cocktail hour and dinner, we are watching.
During the party, we follow the energy.
Photography should adapt to the wedding, not the other way around.
the details you may never notice
Sometimes creating an effortless photograph requires paying attention to things that have nothing to do with posing.
A twisted strap.
A phone sitting on a table behind you.
The way the train of a dress is falling.
A chair breaking an otherwise beautiful composition.
These things seem tiny in the moment, but we notice them because they allow the photograph to feel clean and intentional without changing what was actually happening.
The goal is never perfection.
It is attention.
beautiful doesn’t have to mean staged
We love photographs with intention.
Beautiful light. Thoughtful composition. Movement. Color. Architecture. Fashion.
But we also want photographs to feel alive.
For us, editorial and emotional have never been opposites.
A photograph can be carefully composed and still contain something completely spontaneous. A portrait can feel elevated without feeling stiff. A candid moment can be beautiful without being recreated for the camera.
That balance is where we love to work.
you should be at your wedding
Maybe this is the most important part.
You should have time to hug people.
You should drink the cocktail you spent months choosing.
You should sit at your dinner.
You should dance.
You should disappear for five minutes with your new husband or wife because suddenly you realize you are married.
You should actually experience the celebration you created.
Of course, we will steal you away when the light is incredible.
We will make time for portraits.
We will ask for another thirty seconds when we know there is something worth creating.
But your wedding should never feel like a production built around photographs.
The photographs should be built around your wedding.
Because years from now, we do not only want you to remember what everything looked like.
We want you to remember what it felt like to be there.
And sometimes, the best way to photograph a moment is simply to let it happen.
